September 2010
"You do not decide to become an artist. It is what you are. You feel a passion to create, a belief in what you have to say, a need to express that belief to others, a desire to communicate visually.” -Anonymous
I love the word “slipstream.” Lobsters in the Atlantic Ocean follow each other in a river of deep water known as a slipstream. In choosing materials, I suppose I follow the slipstream at the time I am creating. Usually that means a series will evolve. Right now mixed media has captured my attention--discovering what each different type of material can do to the surface of a canvas. For example, using dress patterns underneath a painting changes everything; it shows through in some areas, or makes a textural difference that makes the surface exciting. I have recently completed a very complicated painting of water plants using the grid method. I want to explore this method of enlarging from my photos and create a series.
I like to absorb as much as I can from others and then reinterpret everything my own way. In teaching, as well, I want my art students to learn from me but find their own way.

Walt Bartman: “How to Critique Your Own Paintings” Workshop
Can you evaluate your own paintings? Have you ever wondered why a painting
is working or not working? We are pleased to announce that Walt Bartman
is offering a one-day September workshop on this subject! Besides being a
wonderful plein air painter, Walt has galleries in Glen Echo, Frederick, and
Tilghman. Most recently, he is showing his work at the Bridge Restaurant on
Tilghman Island, where he will hold this workshop.
Weather permitting, the morning will be spent painting outdoors in any
medium with Walt's assistance. The afternoon session will be devoted to lunch
(included in fee) and Walt's lecture on "How to Critique Your Own Paintings".
Besides having a beautiful waterfront day at the Bridge, you will probably learn
something valuable about your own work. The Fee is $70 for Members and
$105 for Non-members. To register: www.stmichaelsartleague.org
