WALTER BARTMAN, Founder and Director of the Yellow Barn Studio and Gallery

Walt teaches landscape, still life and figure painting classes and workshops, here and abroad. His career spans four decades. He received a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Art History from American University and he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Belgium and Holland. His philosophy of painting centers on personal interpretation and the unique approach to the ordinary. For him, a great painting includes all the arts. He works with all levels of students and challenges them to 'see' more. Walt's own work is representational in subject, but with an abstract approach to seeing and expressing his thoughts on canvas. He is a colorist and he shares his knowledge with his students.

Gita Mirshahi

Gita Mirshahi earned her BFA in drawing & sculpture from Trinity college and her MFA from George Washington University. She works in a wide range of two and three dimensional media - from drawing to print making and painting, to creating sculpture, ceramics or jewelry. Gita has focused of late on spontaneous, free flowing, vibrant paintings, which, though based on the physical world are near calligraphic abstractions. Each painting reflects her own personal brand of 'automatic' rhythms & shapes. She has taught many disciplines and her hallmark is helping the student develop their own vision and techniques. My joy in making art is launching in to uncharted waters, looking for the unexpected approach to the world around us & with in . This means taking risks, investing yourself in the process of discovery, and watching your subject reveal it self. See yourself in different light as you learn to paint with no inhibitions, under Gita's generous tutelage.

Marcie Wolf-Hubbard

Marcie Wolf-Hubbard received her B.A. from the University of Maryland in Studio Art and studied Fine Art and Illustration at the Maryland Institute, College of Art. Her paintings have been exhibited widely on the East Coast. She has illustrated for magazines and books and worked as a courtroom artist. Marcie is an instructor at Glen Echo Park, the Yellow Barn Studio and The Smithsonian. She is also a teaching artist in the community, working with children and adults including individuals with special needs and seniors with dementia.

Marcie and her husband, David Hubbard, are collaborating on a series of books of David's short stories and poems and her encaustic paintings, which have inspired David's writing. Poems From Within is the first book in the series.

Artist's statement

I have always loved to draw. Like most artists, I look and take in what's around me. For the past six years, I have been working in encaustic (hot wax) painting. Painting in encaustic highlights the lines and tonal quality of my charcoal drawings of the figure and nature. Up close, I see the texture on the surface, further emphasized by oilstick on the drawn lines and brushstrokes. Adding collage elements gives more texture, dimension and depth to the paintings. My drawing is an appreciation of the life, personality, spirit and beauty of humanity and nature.

Carol A. Jason

We learn from instructors, but at some point we need to step back and appraise what direction to pursue to find what interests us the most. This class offers a place to explore abstract painting using water-based media for intermediate and advanced artists. Carol A. Jason is the class coordinator but there is no instructor; we benefit from the free flow of ideas from fellow artists.

Carol A. Jason studied acrylic abstract painting at the Yellow Barn with the late Helen Corning. She received her BA and MFA degrees in sculpture from the American University. She studied ceramic hand-building and printmaking at the Corcoran School of Art & Design, and ceramics at Eastern Market Pottery. She holds a diploma in advertising design from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.

Web Bryant

I turned to oil painting and fine art after a long career designing and illustrating some of the great newspapers in our country, including USA Today. The deadline-driven world of journalism required mediums that could be executed quickly. I started out with watercolors and then mastered digital painting with pixels. Now, I'm using oil glazing and other techniques of the Old Masters, and learning to be patient.

My paintings combine a journalistic eye for the narrative, and an intimate view of the passing moment. I paint real places and real people. Places you want to go, and people you would like to meet.

My studio is in suburban Washington, D.C.

Mariana Kastrinakis

Mariana first explored watercolors while working as a physician in the DC area. Over time her work has evolved to incorporate acrylics, collage techniques, drawing, and printmaking. She is now a full-time artist and teacher.

Her work explores the interactions between light and natural elements that produce colors, textures and patterns. Mariana's paintings express her perceptions of the physical environment in semi-abstract ways. Abstraction allows viewers to add their own experiences in interpreting her work. Her paintings, drawings, and prints feature unique design elements, such as stencils, hand-carved stamps, and hand-embellished and gelatin-printed papers.

Mariana's classes provide a supportive environment in which students can unleash and exercise their innate creativity. She believes that expression through art media can promote healing and personal growth.

Mariana has studied with local and nationally renowned artists at the Yellow Barn, the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, among others.

Mariana's art has received multiple awards and she has exhibited extensively in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Jamie Platt

Jamie Platt is a painter from the Midwest who moved to Takoma Park in 2010. She has an MFA in painting from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and a BFA in painting from Kendall College of Art and Design. Jamie is new to the Yellow Barn but has taught classes locally for several years. Before moving to the area, she taught courses in painting, drawing, color, and design at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, Indiana.

As a teacher, Jamie is supportive, enthusiastic, and methodical. Through shared observation and inquiry, Jamie emphasizes the importance of learning to see and analyze relationships. Students in Jamie's classes learn how to break things down and so they can build them back up.

As a painter, Jamie's focus is on examining relationships, too. For her, painting is as much an excavation as an act of building. In the work of painting, she digs into her subject to find out what is actually there and to discover what she wants each painting to be. The act of making a painting externalizes the cause and effect of inspiration.

Themes in Jamie's work vary and are intrinsic to her everyday experience. Jamie believes the job of an artist is to use their voice to say something to the world about what it is like to be a person in their time.
