Artist's Statement
Thank you for visiting my Yellow Barn web page.
I live in Bethesda, MD with my wife and three children. In 2002 I graduated from the Corcoran School of Art + Design after spending the prior 20 years in the hi-tech industry. I taught at the Corcoran for one year as an adjunct professor. Shortly thereafter we added our last two children to our family and making art become much more of a part-time occupation/hobby. Now, with the twins five years old and in school full time, I am able to devote more time to my work. The completion of a 900 sq. foot studio this past year will also act as a catalyst to my ability to generate more hi-quality pieces of art.
It is my strong preference to work in a variety of media and subject matter including painting in oil, acrylic and watercolor, drawing and sketching, fused glass, metal working and welding, silverpoint botanical illustration and others. I work everyday drawing or painting people from life, usually at Starbucks in the morning or at any number of locations I might find myself during the day while running errands, visiting the dentist or doctor’s office or simply waiting in line at DMV. While this daily "workout" is probably my foundation, I am determined to maintain a highly diversified approach toward the media I use, the approaches I take and subject matter I select.
Although it is tempting to tell you something insightful about me or my work, I think it should suffice to say that I enjoy making "things" and, every once in a while, I create something that seems to work particularly well. I think that’s just the law of averages working in my favor. At present, I would rate my work as "fair". I also think my work is becoming more noteworthy because I work very hard at it most everyday -- I am getting better all the time. The harder and longer I work, the better things seem to pan out.
I am fortunate to have had some excellent instructors at the Corcoran (most significantly Bill Christenberry, Bill Newman, Skip Barnhardt, Annette Polin and Hayes Friedman). I am also appreciative of the opportunity to work with Walt Bartman who has been particularly helpful in two ways: first, he is one of the few instructors I know who works on his own pieces in front of his students. Second, he is quite direct and reasoned in providing solid critiques of the work I produced.
