An Artist’s Journey
Traveling with Walt Bartman (Yellow Barn, Glen Echo) on his international workshops introduced me to the joy of painting. My imagination responded to his challenge to study light, color, and design in the landscape. For several years I was merely a photographic observer on these trips. Then, in 2003, my semi-retirement from a professional career as a research economist at NIST afforded me the time to pursue painting in Walt’s Painting Landscapes on Location classes and workshops. With wonderful surprise, I found that plein air painting enriched my travel experience far beyond what my camera could and also introduced me to the beauty and variety of the Maryland landscape.
My work is representational, seeking to capture the feeling of the landscape. Plein-air experience includes seven years in Painting on Location classes with Walt Bartman plus workshops with Walt in Maine, Big Sur, the Bahamas, Sicily, Prague and Budapest, Mallorca, Santorini, Florence, Ireland, Mexico, and Argentina. I take advantage of local workshops by other Maryland artists and enjoy participating in a variety of plein-air paint-outs such as the Frederick County Barnstormers and the Kensington Labor Day Art Show. I held solo exhibitions of my work at the Yellow Barn Gallery in 2006 and 2008. My paintings have been accepted in eleven juried shows sponsored by the Yellow Barn and Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association, and won first prizes in the 2011, 2010, and 2006 Annual Montgomery Village Art Shows, second prizes in 2008 and 2005, and honorable mentions in 2010, 2007, and 2005.
