Artist's Statement
Rachel Collins considers herself a realistic painter of nature’s abstract form. She grew up in a home in New York State where her mother taught oil painting, design and composition, but did not pursue art on her own until her children were in school and she had returned to the States after living thirteen years in Israel. Her paintings have earned recognition and awards on the regional and national level, and are frequently included in nationally competitive watercolor exhibits such as Watercolor USA and the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibit. In the Washington area, she is a member of the Torpedo Factory Artists Association, shows her work regularly through The Art League in Alexandria and in exhibits by the Potomac Valley Watercolorists. Her work has appeared recently in solo shows in local colleges, universities and in the Art League Solo Artist Gallery. Her love for close-focus nature subjects derives in part from an interest in natural science illustration. She teaches classes and workshops in watercolor at The Art League School in Alexandria, VA, as well as at the Yellow Barn Studio, and currently serves as the president of the Potomac Valley Watercolorists. For the past three years she has taught an intensive course in watercolor at the Baha’i Academy for the Arts in England.
