Recent Work by Lida Stifel
Lida Stifel, a native of the Washington, DC area, lives and works on a small farm near Darnestown, MD. Her work is inspired by the landscape in her immediate surroundings as well as from travels to Europe, the American West and Florida. The human figure is also an ongoing passion for Stifel and she has taught figure painting at the Yellow Barn studio in Glen Echo, Maryland for 15 years.
A perceptual realist, Stifel's paintings range from landscape to the human figure to abstraction. Her paintings are generated by things that she responds to in nature and are conceived with a strong emphasis on light and shadow. Although she experiments with techniques and materials , her work is imbued with a strong sense of respect for the traditions of art and balances on the edge of reality and abstraction.
Ms. Stifel attended Hollins College and Ohio Weslayan University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history and painting. She continued her education at the Corcoron School of Art in Washington, D.C., where she studied with William Christenberry.
